You can buy software such as Tom Rom, CoPilot or Destinator for your Windows (and some Symbian based) mobile, but if your car already has in built DVD based sat nav (and a lot do these days), then you won't want to buy another piece of sat nav software. Standalone camera detection devices such as Road Angel can work out expensive as it's subscription based.
However the Windows Mobile site Modaco has released Cameraware, which for twenty pounds inculdes a lifetime subscription to an updated camera database. It works with BT GPS devices, just like Tom Tom. For more information head to this Modaco forum thread.

Free maps for your Pocket PC
If you need to get directions, and don't use sat nav (or aren't in the car), take a look at www.uk.map24.com/. As well as being able to view maps and get directions when online, you can also download a beta Pocket PC client. This uses GPRS to function, so if you don't have a generous data bundle, you'd better be careful (although it does include a data counter). It's software like this and hubdog (see previous post) that are really going to push the Windows Mobile platform. You'll never need an A to Z or a road map again!
RSS, Podcast downloads and much more for Pocket PC
If you have a pocket pc and a generous gprs data plan, have look at www.hubdog.com. You can manage rss feeds, subscribe to podcasts, video downloads etc and download them automatically to your device. The best bit is you can also manage everything via a pc. Recommended

Less is more?
I have 2 mobile phones. One is a T-Mobile MDA Vario (UK). This is great for the web and email on the move (especially as I work away from home during the week, with no Internet access after work hours). It also does sat nav, and enables me to upload to this blog.
The other is a Sony Ericsson K750, which is great at calls and txt, and has a great 2 megapixel camera as well as java based games (I'm addicted to mini golf!). At times this is the easier handset to have in my pocket.
I like both, but for different reasons.

Four years a long time in IT
I updated my web site today. I realised it was 4 years since it had been seriously looked at.
In 2002 I didn't have broadband, web design was all tables and Flash, VOIP for the masses didn't exist, and my mobile could only handle calls and txt. Wonder what the IT lanscape will look like in another 4 years?
